I built a MIDI function generator for the iOS. It overrides assignable NRPN signals (for older synths and drum machines like the EA-1 pictured) and applies looped envelopes from the touch-controlled cubic Hermite spline. Patches can be saved and edited and multiple patches can run simultaneously, applying the functions to multiple parameters on the synth at the same time.

Introduction: a motivation for the problem

Interested in the capabilities of mobile devices as processors for multi-sensory data and motivated to gain experience building mobile devices, we decided to develop an image processing application for the iPhone that uses the phone’s sensory hardware. Inspired by Jason Salavon’s work in augmenting visual data, we set out to effectively build a digital kaleidoscope.

Related work

In the field of new media and by individual developers like ourselves, many have begun to play with mobile devices for nearly every purpose imaginable. Our application combines both interactivity with visual art, in a way that we have not previously encountered. The most closely related imagery comes from Jason Salavon’s work. He is the creator of the idea to redraw sampled data in radial form. While Salavon took entire movies and rendered them as radial images, we take a single image and redraw a selection of its contents as a radial image. Furthermore, many larger companies and research groups such as NVidea and researchers at the MIT Media lab are working on using mobile devices as a medium to implement software for computer vision and augmented reality because the phone is an accessible and encompassing system to distribute this technology.

Design considerations: e.g. Is performance an important factor?

During development, performance was a major issue and frankly still is. Before the release of our first prototype, we increased performance by about tenfold by precomputing the color data for each pixel when the image is taken. In addition, we spent quite a lot of time on filtering the accelerometer data so that only true movements would trigger screen re-sampling. We have not yet achieved real-time processing, but are still working towards that.

Edit: Since updating to iOS 6, performance is significantly less noticeable.

Key features of your program and how to interact with it

Our program launches with the camera interface for taking pictures. Once a picture is taken, our program converts the image data into a form that we can use for drawing circles. This process takes approximately 5 seconds at which point the circles begin to be drawn on the screen. As the user rotates the phone, accelerometer data triggers a kaleidoscopic effect, redrawing the circles in real time. If the user taps once anywhere onscreen, the camera interface appears and a new picture can be taken. If the user rotates the phone to the left approximately 90 degrees, the display changes to black and white.

Results

We had to overcome an initial learning curve for iPhone development. Specifically, we had to learn Objective-C, set up a subversion repository through Xcode, provision our phones for development, integrate our program with the interface builder, initialize the phone’s camera and accelerometer, and lastly learn how to use the CoreGraphics library.

Notice that the interaction visualizes depth, where the thickness of the concentric circles generated is proportional to the distance the pattern is from the camera’s lens. Structured 3D scanners work in a similar fashion, often projecting striped patterns onto a surface to analyze depth and orientation.

Discussion: What are the strengths and weaknesses of your design? What questions does it help you answer? Did you meet your goals?

The strengths of our design lie in the simplicity of operation and the interesting, artistic effects produced. In addition, the inclusion of accelerometer data gives the application a much more interactive feel as well as augments the “wow” factor of the application. While the application does not directly help answer any unsolved computer graphics questions, it is an attempt to explore the iPhone as a sensory data capture device. We strove to draw interesting artistic representations of captured image data and to this effect we were successful. Our initial goal was to use the iPhone’s sensory data to draw imagery and we achieved our primary objective with great success.

Future work: possible extensions and improvements

We eventually would like to improve performance so that we can process image data in real time, rather than relying on rendering. Also, using the application as a method of computing would be the next logical step. In addition to using the radial representation of image data as a tool, we would like to augment the feature set of the application to be able to use more of the sensory data that the iPhone is capable of detecting. Microphone input mode as well as raster based image generation of video clips and real time computing are just a few of the many possible functions that we would like to include in future versions. When we feel it is complete, we want to release the application to the iTunes App store.
